Bro, Im from sweden. I cellebrated midsummer, and I was terrified. I think the restaurant scene was what one cult called flirty fishing. I wasn"t aware of the issue regarding children competing for the affection of the leader; that was very helpful. The scene where Christian was tripping and the guy clapped in his face is super disturbing to me for some reason. When I think of Midsommar I think of Midsomer Murders and with that expectation set for me I was surprised there were so few deaths lol.

As a Swedish person I find this to be an offensive and unrealistic representation of our culture because it always rains during Midsommar. I love this movie and that there is so much discussion about it. Also, I love it that ALL the characters are morally ambiguous. Hårgas are a cult and and they wanted Dani to be May Queen. They manipulated the events so that they could advance Christian and Dani to break up. This is what cults do in real life - destroy old relationships in order to get people in. This was made possible, because they are BOTH confused, both having their issues and lack of direction. But I"m amazed that people consider Dani, she took part in choosing a human sacrifice, when the morally / ethically choice would to refuse? It"s a horror movie but people are pretty messed up if they don"t see that. I don"t think what Christian does can be called gaslighting - but he"s still being quite spineless and manipulative, but more out of instinct rather than any plan. Video about Gaslighting and Midsommar: Who is acting out of a plan, are the Hårgas. They want to break-up Dani and Christian. They create the environment where he feels like an outsider, and she feels like she belongs there. This is a point I haven"t seen been mentioned often: when they make Dani choose the final sacrifice- in what condition is Christian? Unable to SAY ANYTHING. Dani is angry at him, justifiably, but at a man who the Hårgas have made paralyzed and unable to speak. And they want Dani to be freshly heartbroken, so he would pick Christian- because doing so, she is made accomplice to the killing. That"s her TRUE FINAL RITE into the Hårgas. Not the fabricated theatre of May Queen crowning, but making her take active part in choosing sacrifices. In that moment, she"s liberated, but also insane. Is Christian a shitty boyfriend? Yes. Should they break-up? Yes. Should Dani choose a sacrifice? No. She should have either picked the Hårga man or flat-out refuse to choose ANYONE as a sacrifice. People idolising Dani somehow seem to overlook this lol. You go girl, be held and find a new home, take part in human sacrifices! Is a new side shown out of Dani in the end? Yes, but it"s partly because she"s gone insane. The original script literally describes the smile as insane, as liberation that the insane only can feel. She has lost everything and she"s made to choose a sacrifice- a sacrifice that she"s also being manipulated into. And she is now in the control of the Hårgas after that. She"s taken part into their murders. The suit made out of flowers is a perfect metaphor: they shower her with love, but wanting to imprison her. She"s so overwhelmed with the flowers it"s hard for her to move. They welcome her home, because as the only blond female of the group, she"s the perfect baby making machine for their blood lines. A pregnant woman has more trouble to escape as well. And this is why I love this movie even more than Hereditary: it"s even more psychological, doesn"t require supernatural aspects- and it"s core strength is at what is IMPLIED even more than what is actually shown. That is powerful. NEITHER Dani or Christian are innocent. Neither are they guilty. They are lost, confused pawns and neither find any true liberation in the end. One loses his life, one loses their soul, sanity and individuality. There"s a chance she will adjust but that is left open. I think it"s a perfect ending to a horror movie. The character that has lost the most, has also become part of something truly sinister.

I thought he would mention how they gave those volunteers some kinda paste on their tongue not to feel fear or pain but they felt both and started screaming. Similar to him i was invited to a “talk” that i was told by a friend was about communication that he said would be good for my sales work. It turned out to be a cult. First your in a room with a heap of people including the friend while people talk about how the organisation helped them so much blah blah blah. Then they separate you from your friend and put you in a room with a speaker in the front and then 3 people behind you watching taking notes. Youre instructed to do an activity where you take your trauma and then break down your personality. Then they ask you to sign up for more workshops, all of a sudden those people behind you come up close and try and pressure you to sign up for 700 per session corses. I freaked out, told them i was going to the toilet then bolted out of there, and several people chased me. I didnt go to work for a week or 2 afraid to leave the house. Saw my doctor and he referred me to a psychologist to speak to who reassured me and then i was able to return to work. It was only a couple of hours one night with this cult and it fucked me up so i can imagine how it would be to stay there longer.

I didnt like Midsommar and the main reason is because I felt lost during the whole film. The community or the cult just acts to weird, I strugled to understand their behaviour in almost every action. Has anybody watched this movie while high? Jesus Christ, it must be the craziest trip ever. Cool movie, btw. Do NOT eat something really heavy while watching though.
